Getting real through getting visual: How visual thinking helps this consultant achieve results.

We spoke to Lauralee about strategic vision, prioritisation and successful execution. 

 

Turning Visual

“For me, it’s not about creating a strategy for my client, and then leaving them to figure the rest out on their own. It’s about how I help my clients become aligned to their vision, and facilitate how they are going to execute their business strategy,” she tells me. What Lauralee does is different. She is focussed on visual and design thinking techniques. “My clients are smart – they know what they want, they know their business and they know what they want to achieve. But so often, problems arise when teams are not engaged, aligned or in agreement with core strategic principles. That’s where I come in. My job is to facilitate – and I use visual techniques to get the team engaged and visually see where their company is going. I call on my years of leadership development, team performance and strategic planning, and combine all of those skills to make the business more effective as a whole for their leadership team to manage."  

 

Most common pitfalls in executing Organisational Strategy

Lack of Alignment
What I see most of the time with companies who need help formulating and executing an effective strategy, is a simple lack of alignment on the organisation’s vision. Many are not sure where they need to be heading, or how they’re going to get there. Having Vision is being able to see where I’m going – and that means looking at the trends of what’s happening around me, and realise how that impacts my organisation.” Lauralee uses the well-known case of the taxi industry and the rise of Uber. “If the taxi market had been looking at industry trends, and the change in the way consumers are buying – we might see that Uber may never have happened”, she says.  

Ineffective Teams
Lauralee also accredits a failure to see strategic success to an ineffective team who is unable to execute a business strategy successfully. “I help teams using methodology and process that makes people work better together. At the end of the day – executing a business strategy is not down to a single person, but rather an entire team of people who are aligned, and in sync with each other, cross-functionally”. 

Inability to Prioritise
Whether you’re a mom, or a team, a leader or a large organisation – the inability to prioritise the most impactful things is the biggest challenge we face. Organisations build these strategies, and have teams that need to deliver against them. If they aren’t able to prioritise based on resources and key revenue drivers, they’re in serious trouble. Not prioritising leads to gridlock – and in my workshops with my clients, we go through exercises where they have to do just that. Sometimes, it is as simple as assigning a name to a task – and, being visual, it very quickly becomes clear when the execution of a strategy is imbalanced when, for example, Jim, has 83 tasks but everyone else simply has 15,” she adds. 

Inability to embrace change
Not being able, or willing, to embrace change immediately places your organisation in an unstable position. Echoing the sentiments above, the ability to embrace change means that your organisation remains agile and flexible. Your business culture becomes one that is familiar with adapting to market ebbs and flows, and gives you the stronger advantage in getting to your winning line quicker than your competitor.
