IWD Spotlight Series: Siobhan Gallagher

Rachel Grice

Last up in our International Women's Day spotlight series, Talmix talks to Siobhan Gallagher, a highly experienced sales operations and enablement leader, about the impact of the pandemic,  self care and paving the way for future female leaders.

Why did you first decide to go independent?

I lost my job due to the pandemic and at the same time became a carer for my father.  Working for myself and consulting suited the demands on my time at that moment.  I was able to fit work and client requirements around my life.

As my circumstances have changed with less demands on me in my personal life, working freelance as a consultant has become even better suited to my life.  Thanks to Talmix I've now got a great consultancy remote contract which means that effectively I can work from anywhere in Europe, connectivity permitting! I love it!

How did the pandemic affect you?

The pandemic affected my work life massively.  I went from being an employee, losing my job and having to look around, assess what skills were in demand and how I could pivot to commoditise my knowledge and skillset.  Luckily, my experience and skillset is at a premium as a result of the 'Great Resignation' so in a very painful roundabout way, the pandemic has benefitted what I do!

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

International Women's Day is a chance for all women to look back at how far we have come and what we have achieved.  It's a chance to look around and see how we can help other women lean in and level up to achieve their full potential.  And, it's a chance to look forward and make sure that we are shaping the future that we want to have, for us and those coming after us.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to other women looking to embark upon an independent career?

Network in person, remotely via socials and then engage again in real life.  Talk to other people about what you want to do and learn from their experiences.  Done is better than perfect.  And make sure that you carve time out for self care.  Otherwise you will burn out.  Lastly, just do it.  There has never been a better time to work independently!

What is making you feel positive these days?

The easing up of Covid restrictions and being able to have in person events again. And summer - just getting out of a long winter.  Oh, and making money and building a future for myself!
