When an interview starts out with the words, “I come from a family of spies and teachers”, you cannot help but sit up, sharpen your pencil, and hit the record button. I recently spoke to Talmix consultant Bob about independent consulting, being the son of a spy and a teacher, and the effect it has had on his long-term career.
As Bob says, “When Mom and Dad met, she was a medical researcher/teacher for the National Institutes of Health. Dad was just back from World War II where he had been in serving as an operative for various Allied organisations (his own version of independent consulting). It is said one is formed by one’s family. If so, coming from a family of spies and teachers, I began to naturally figure out how things worked, how to understand people, and teach others to do what I did.”
When it comes to management consulting, two things Bob is not short of are passion and know-how. The purpose of the services he provides is to help organisations operate at their maximum effectiveness, with the skill and talent already present in that business.
But in speaking to him, it’s his philosophical approach to consulting which sets him apart. Paraphrasing a quote from former President Clinton, Bob says, “As a consultant, you have to follow the trend lines, not the headlines.” The difference now is that as the world has become flat and hyper-connected, those trends happen so quickly. Consultants need to be prepared for the changes and evolutions of those trends. We have to be exceptional at reading organisational culture. We have to know that it’s not about us, it’s about our clients. We have to take our egos out of the equation. It is our job to nurture the relationship with the client so we reach the goal that works in their best interest and delivers what they want as an organisation”.
Today, from working with NGOs in the Caribbean, South America and the United States, such as Australia-based TIA International Aid and the Faith & Love In Action Orphanage in Haiti to various healthcare and technology firms – Bob’s career has been marked by diversity and practical results.
His work with clients has helped them reduce costs, increase productivity, implement best practices and performance monitoring systems to support continuous improvement, and more. The results of his work speak for themselves and there’s no doubt as to why clients choose Bob to coach, manage, and lead their teams through times of business change and growth.
Testimonials from clients point to the fact that ‘Bob shows you a whole new way of looking at a project’, and ‘his combination of expertise, good humour, and dedication to the client coupled with his eye-popping creativity & attention to detail, really delivers’.
Along with helping his clients become more effective, Bob is also committed to his own development. He has a love for management education ignited while he earned his MBA in Strategy Management & Marketing under renowned author, educator, and management consultant Peter F. Drucker. He is currently enrolled in the Ed.D. program at Northeastern University with a focus on Organisational Leadership, and is a part-time lecturer at the D’Amore McKim School of Business at Northeastern.
As a professor, trusted advisor, and consultant, Bob is able to quickly build trust and influence with a community, a board, and throughout an organisation. A stalwart in the consulting community, Bob is the just the kind of person you want guiding your team to success.
It may not be often that you are presented with the opportunity to work with someone who exemplifies leadership by example and who is passionate about making your business goal a success.
