1. When you’re at a networking event, how do you describe your independent career status, and where you focus your work?
I would tell others that I am a Digital Consultant, connected to business opportunities by Talmix, a global marketplace for high-end business talent. I have sole proprietorship of my own freelance company registered in Singapore, and a professional indemnity insurance to ensure the work that I put in is high-quality, valuable and reliable. Given my strong and long online marketing and social media experience, I usually specialize in working on digital projects.
2. What are the specific benefits that you, as an independent, offer your clients? How do you explain the value your expertise brings?
If I were to highlight three it would be reliability, integrity and digital expertise. There are always talent looking out for jobs and opportunities, however not everyone is dedicated and takes full ownership of the work that they decided to pursue. It sounds really simple but I strongly believe my personal asset is giving my best and having the right attitude to complete all tasks professionally and with high quality. Also, given my in-depth experience in several domains such as stakeholder management, digital projects, and project/account management, the amalgamation of these skillset enables the probability of completing digital projects more effectively and efficiently.
3. Why do you think there is increasing demand for independent expertise?
Many great talents usually stay within a specific industry or organization for a long period of time: sometimes more than 10 or 15 years. While they are respectable specialists in a definitive industry, it removes their opportunity to be experts in other fields. As such it’s a wise solution to engage external independent experts to solve unique different issues or projects.
4. What's your favourite thing to do when you're off the clock?
Yoga! I love spending time with my kids outside office hours but yoga really helps me to physically exercise and clear my mind.
5. What advice would you give to anyone about to embark on an independent career as to how they can provide the best results for a client, while fulfilling their own career path?
Define your niche and be clear with your value proposition. Take full ownership to provide all the deliverables expected by the client in a clear, timely, and concise manner. Ensure your client’s expectations are aligned from the very beginning and try your very best to meet or exceed it.
